In what has to be one of the best stories of how someone got into the music biz...

In the late 1960s, while Prine was delivering mail in Maywood, Illinois, he began to sing at open mic evenings at the Fifth Peg on Armitage Avenue. Prine was initially a spectator, reluctant to perform, but eventually did so in response to a "You think you can do better?" comment made to him by another performer. Chicago Sun-Times movie critic Roger Ebert heard him there and wrote the first review Prine ever received, calling him a great songwriter.

In 1971 Prine's self-titled debut album was released. He and friend Steve Goodman had each been active in the Chicago folk scene before being "discovered" by Kris Kristofferson (Kristofferson remarked that Prine wrote songs so good that "we'll have to break his thumbs"). The album included his signature songs "Illegal Smile," "Sam Stone," and the folk and country standards "Angel from Montgomery" and "Paradise." The album also included "Hello In There", a song about aging that was later covered by numerous artists and "Far From Me," a lonely waltz about lost love for a waitress that Prine later said was his favorite of all his songs. The album received many positive reviews, and some hailed Prine as "the next Dylan." Bob Dylan himself appeared unannounced at one of Prine's first New York City club appearances, anonymously backing him on harmonica.

Here is another in my "New Jersey" series. This is the 2nd single from NJ Pop Rock band SHRAPNEL. The band included David Wyndorf (future Monster Magnet leader), Daniel Rey (aka Daniel Rabinowitz - future Ramones producer), Phil Caivano (now also in Monster Magnet), Danny Clayton and Dave Voght (RIP).

I've known Dave Wyndorf for years but don't have a personal relationship with him, but are paths have crossed through the years, but Dave Vogt was one of the coolest and nicest guys around. He used to bar tend at certain joints around the Jersey shore and always had good things to say and was always easy flowing with the beers....

I remember seeing these guys on a local TV show waaaaaaay back in the day long before i ever heard of Monster Magnet. And i know these guys were kinda poised for success having had their own comic book back then and after 2 singles were signed to Elektra and released an EP. Not really sure what happened, but hey, their breaking up formed Monster Magnet.

I have the 1st single somewhere but for some reason i haven't been able to track this one down until now. Its a far cry from the drugged out psych rock of early Monster Magnet but its a fun little power pop rock ride for a few minuets.

I had always thought that Bad Guys came before The Worst but i was just told from Greg Gory of The Chronic Sick that The Worst came first THEN they changed to the Bad Guys but after everyone told them this was a bad idea and they then went back to being The Worst.

Good thing they did too because this record is no where near the ripping hardcore awesomeness of what The Worst were. What we have here is a more punky power pop type style. I guess these guys were trying to be more "mature"....??? I for one am glad they went back to the jersey shore knuckle head hardcore shore-core thing. Its not a bad record but it aint The Worst.... heh....

wow, this thing is all over the place..... just another meaningless mix tape. I've said it before about these things but i can't imagine that anyone reading this has read anything else i've ever posted or could begin to believe that anyone has read anything else i've ever posted so let me say again that originally these things were almost always made just for me for driving in the car to work in the morning or to listen to while at work (at least in the early days my job would allow music to be played) and since these things were made rather hap-hazard and really only for me (a few made their way to some other peoples hands) they can really be a bit "odd".... hey, i like a lot of different music and i would make tapes of some of the stuff i would find out and about and add some stuff i had laying around. i've been feeling a bit self conscious about these things and was even thinking about pulling the plug, thinking who the fuck i am to think that anyone wants to hear this stupid waste of time and all these silly tapes..... well i got a few people saying the like them! and i like them too! so now you have to endure more!

Lead singer Ruben Grundy, his brother Joe Grundy, and Carl Moland lived on the same street in Bakersfield. When the three moved to Los Angeles to attend L.A. City College, they put together a vocal group with fellow student Leroy Smith, who came from New Jersey. (Love all things Jersey!)

Not my favorite version of this Willie Nelson penned classic, that would belong to Jimmy Elledge, but when a song is written this great from the start its really hard to get a bad version. I alway wondered how the real country crowd took to black artists doing country records? Anyway, I do own the Elledge version on 45 but i can't seem to find it so here is a 1966 version of Funny How Time Slips Away by Brooke Benton. A worthy replacement for the time being.

Ok, so i bought this acetate for 25 cents and I'm a bit puzzled (not hard to do). There are 2 different sets of writing on this thing. The pencil underneath i can not make out, but on top of the pencil in pen it says Del Rockers, 1981, Ricky - Tom - Frank - Walt + Mike on both sides. Is this really from 1981? I have several other Audiodisc acetates and they look just like this one but are from the early to late 50's. Were they still making these audiodisc acetates in 1981? and the acapella doo wop sounds on this sound hauntingly authentic. Did the Del Rockers nail it in 1981? Or did some band called the Del Rockers mock up this acetate as a goof or trick? I don't know.... Both tunes are pretty good for accapella, which I'm not really a big fan of. I don't really know the names of the songs but i took a stab considering they say the same thing a bunch of times in each song. If any of this rings a bell drop a note and let me know. Thanks.

This record is pretty beat and i wouldn't have even bought it if not for the picture that was stuck in the sleeve. I found this @ the local flea market and bought it because of that pic. I mean, the song is great ( a cool little soul dance number from 1963) but the record condition leaves a bit to be desired. I've talked about it before but it always sorta bums me out when i find stuff like this while digging for records. People will clean out houses and take the entire contents to the flea market and try and sell whatever they can and it bums me out that stuff like pictures and personal family items that no one in the family wants just end up in a pile of junk with strangers rooting through it... Anyway try and enjoy the tune even with the snap crackle and pops and dig on that family photo and hope that one day your stuff doesn't end up in a flea market because no one in your family cares enough....

Robert & Johnny were an American doo-wop duo from The Bronx.

The duo's full names were Robert Carr and Johnny Mitchell; they released about a dozen singles for Old Town Records in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Two of them charted; "We Belong Together", which hit #12 on the U.S. Black Singles chart and #32 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958, and "I Believe In You", which hit #93 on the Hot 100 later that year. They wrote most of their own songs, and were distinguished by their vocal style, which Richie Unterberger has described as "one smoky, one nasal".

"We Belong Together" was a 1958 American rhythm and blues hit by Robert & Johnny. It was written by Johnny Mitchell, Robert Carr, and Sam Weiss. It reached #12 on the R&B charts and #32 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The song was later recorded by several others. The Fleetwoods released a version on their 1959 album, Mr. Blue.
A rendition by Ritchie Valens was released in 1959 on the Del-Fi record label and can be found on several of his albums. It's also featured in a scene from the 1987 hit film about Valens, La Bamba.
The Belmonts released a remake on the Laurie label, Laurie 3080, in 1961, after they had split with Dion. It was not a hit, but was later reissued on a collector's label because of its musical value.
In 1961, Jimmy Velvit recorded it in the Dallas, Texas area. (see "Rockin' With Velvit" CD Seduction Records SCD-102, 2000) It attracted a lot of attention and air-play and became the #1 song on the Dallas radio station, KLIF, for a period of six weeks.
A different singer using the name Jimmy Velvet had a #75 hit with the song on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.
Peaches & Herb included the song on their album, Let's Fall In Love.

Like lots of old good records when you find them out in the wild they are usually pretty beat up. This is because they were played over and over again. I can see this gem being played at some house party in Philly (where i found this and where the cruisers were from) and picked up and played again and again while drinks were drank, drugs were drugged and dancin' and carrying on ensued, hence they wear and tear. I notice this same pattern on lots of old Rolling Stones records compared to Beatles records of the same time. This is because Stones fans of the day were a rowdier brand of hooligan while Beatles fans were mostly young girls.... Anyway, If i Knew is the A side here but the $$$ is Miss Fine IMHO....

The Cruisers from Philadelphia, PA never had a significant record. Patterning themselves after the Harptones, group leader Gene Williams, Randy Hamilton, Paul Long, and McKinley Anthony began recording on V-Tone Records. The deal resulted in two single releases in 1960: "Miss Fine" b/w "If I Knew," and "Don't Tease Me" b/w "Crying Over You;" the latter got pegged for mass distribution two years later by Guyden Records only to die a second time. Five years passed before their next deal in 1967 with Gamble Records, who were charting with the Intruders' records. "I Need You So" b/w "Take A Chance," reeked with sentiment but despite its charm didn't sell, and the Cruisers languished for nearly three years before their final release. Bunny Sigler brought the Cruisers' doo-wop skills out the closet with "Picture Us" b/w "Mink and Sable Mable," but Gamble Records only seem able to get hits on Sonny & the Intruders; while others including Ruth McFadden, the Jaggerz, the Futures, the Butlers, and the Epsilons always came up empty. Sigler later cut a solo version of "Picture Us" on Philadelphia International Records, and the Cruisers went on with their lives.

Not sure what to make of this... Some goofy (punk) rock.... New Wave Nursing Home is trying to be punky but they can't even help but throw a straight rock breakdown in the end along the lines of something The Rubber City Rebels would do. So it has a more rock feel then punk even w/ the sorta snotty vocals. Hey! Cave Man is even sorta funky w/ some real guitar chops which leaves me to believe these guys were real rockers just goofing around but i couldn't find anything out to make a positive I.D. Anyone know anything about them?

Kind of a strange one here. On the surface this looks like any other b-grade AOR record from 1977. But the 1st thing i found odd was the fact that this was released on the De-Lite record label that is pretty much known for Funk and Disco records so when i saw these denim & polyester clad hair farmers i thought WTF? Are these white boys trying to get funky? But no, this is a standard rock record and not to far from the radio rock that was out and about in the mid/late 70's. Think along the lines of Styx, Journey, Kansas, Boston, Etc. Some sounds a bit earlier as well maybe like those couple of Paris albums featuring Bob Welch. There is even a kinda hillbily shit kicker tune and a Jethro Tull sounded flute rocker. Over all its actually a pretty enjoyable rockin' little record. There is even a radio sounding hit w/ "Love Again"... That should have been huge on the radio back then. Once can't think that if these cats weren't so damn ugly and on a disco label, that i can't imagine knew how to promote a rock record, they might have been famous.

Bob Luman (born as Robert Glynn Luman 15 April 1937 - December 27, 1978) was an American country and rockabilly singer.

Luman was born in Nacogdoches, Texas. His early interest in music was influenced by his father, an amateur fiddle, guitar and harmonica player. Bob Luman received his first guitar when he was thirteen years of age.
Luman attended high school in Kilgore, where the family had moved after young Bob's birth. It was in high school that Luman started his first band.
Bob Luman had been a baseball star in his high school, and he tried out with the Major League Baseball Pittsburgh Pirates, but when he didn't make it in professional baseball, he decided to concentrate on music. In 1956, he won a talent contest promoted by the Future Farmers of America, which earned him an appearance on the Louisiana Hayride.
For the Hayride, Luman formed a backup band called the Shadows, including James Burton on guitar, James Kirkland on bass and Butch White on drums. In 1957, the band signed with Imperial Records, where they recorded "All Night Long" and "Amarillo Blues."
That same year, the band appeared on the Town Hall Party in Los Angeles, and appeared in the movie Carnival Rock, where they backed up David Houston.
The following year, having been dropped by Imperial Records, Luman signed with Capitol Records, where he released "Try Me" and "I Know My Baby Cares." Capitol Records wanted Luman to change his name, which he refused to do, so he left the record label and signed with Warner Bros. Records, recording "Class of '59" and "Loretta."
In 1960, Luman was drafted into the United States Army. It was while still in the Army that Warner Bros. Records released Luman's best-known crossover hit, "Let's Think About Living," a novelty song that hit #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #9 on the Billboard country music chart. It also reached the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart.
After leaving the Army in 1962, Luman moved to Nashville, where he married. In 1965, he joined the Grand Ole Opry.

Luman toured frequently in the 60s and 70s, and became popular in Las Vegas, with an act which combined country and rockabilly. He signed with Epic Records in 1968, and had several hits with them, including "Lonely Women Make Good Lovers" and "Still Loving You." "Lonely Women Make Good Lovers" became his biggest country hit, hitting #4 on the country chart. (Steve Wariner, who had earlier been a member of Luman's band, later covered the song in 1984, and he, too, took it to #4 on the country charts.)
Luman's other country hits included "Ain't Got Time To Be Unhappy" (1968), "Ballad of Two Brothers" (with Autry Inman, 1968), "When You Say Love" (1972), "Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)" (1973), "Proud Of You Baby" (1975), and "The Pay Phone" (1977). Perhaps his most unusual song was a slow, soulful recitation of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone."
Luman died in Nashville of pneumonia in 1978, at the age of forty-one. After his death, Bear Family Records released several compilations of his songs, including More of the Rocker, Still Rockin' and Carnival Rock.
Luman is a member of both the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.

Buzz Clifford (born Reese Francis Clifford III, October 8, 1941, Berwyn, Illinois) is an American pop singer and songwriter.

Clifford played guitar as a child and won several talent competitions as a teenager. He signed to Bow Records at age 15, releasing a few singles but finding no success. After signing with Columbia Records, he released the single "Hello Mr. Moonlight", which did not chart. The follow-up, "Baby Sittin' Boogie"/"Driftwood" (though "Driftwood" was technically the B-side the record tends to be regarded as a double-A-side), became a crossover hit in the U.S. in 1961, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, #27 R&B, and #28 Country. The record went on to sell over one million copies, and as a result of its success, Columbia tried to groom Clifford as a heartthrob pop singer. He appeared on TV with Perry Como and Merv Griffin and on American Bandstand, and toured the United Kingdom with Freddy Cannon and Dion. Clifford's fame was short-lived, however; further singles went nowhere (a remake of Kay Kyser's "Three Little Fishies" hit #102) and Clifford soon found himself without a recording contract.

After serving in the National Guard, Clifford moved to Los Angeles, California, and found work as a songwriter, writing tunes sung by Keith Barbour, Petula Clark, Clyde McPhatter, Lou Rawls, Leon Russell, Freddie King, and Kris Kristofferson. Later in the 1960s, he was involved with a band called Carp (including actor Gary Busey and songwriter Daniel Moore), who released one album on Epic Records in 1969. After a stint as one third of the group Hamilton Streetcar (with John Boylan of "Appletree Theatre" fame, and original group member Ralph Plummer—the group was originally named on behalf of former member John Burge, aka Ian Hamilton) which in 1969 recorded a self-titled album for Dot Records (Dot DLP25939), he also did recording sessions in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with former Beach Boy David Marks, but these were never issued.

Little Roger and the Goosebumps is a pop/rock band from San Francisco active during the 1970s and early 1980s and resurrected in 2006. It has been led throughout its history by Roger Clark and Dick Bright, with various sidemen.
The band is best known for its single "Gilligan's Island (Stairway)", a song combining the lyrics to the theme song of the television show Gilligan's Island with the music of "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. The band wrote the song in 1977 as "material to pad the last set of the grueling 5 nights a week/4 sets a night routine," recorded it in March 1978, and released it as a single in May 1978 on their own Splash Records label. Within five weeks, Led Zeppelin's lawyers threatened to sue them and demanded that any remaining copies of the recording be destroyed.[citation needed] The song was reissued in 2000 on the CD Laguna Tunes with the song title renamed "Stairway to Gilligan's Island."

During a 2005 interview on National Public Radio, Robert Plant referred to the tune as his favorite cover of "Stairway to Heaven."

Anyone who likes the Leaves, the Seeds et al will love the early cuts by this band, a hard-luck Chicago outfit who couldn't turn a local wave of popular enthusiasm into something bigger, despite some good songs. Their later stuff was more self-consciously psychedelic, but it's still very well done, with superb playing and harmonies. The Lemon Drops were Jeff Brand (bass), Bobby Lunack (rhythm guitar), Gary Weiss (drums), Eddie Weiss (rhythm guitar), and Danny Smola (vocals), who began rehearsing in the Weiss home when they were between 14 and 17 years old. With lead guitarist Ricky Erickson in tow and later an official member, they cut their first record, "I Live In the Springtime," for Rembrandt, a local label co-owned by one of the Weisses' elder siblings. "I Live in the Springtime" got an enthusiastic reception locally, and was played as far away as New York. The bandmembers became celebrities among the local kids when they were thrown out of school for their long hair. By that time, they were on their second single, the angry anti-Vietnam rocker "It Happens Everyday," and soon after had a new lead singer, Dick Sidman. The band slipped easily into the psychedelic blossoming of the Summer of Love, adding more overt flower-power references to their mix of sounds. It looked as though RCA was interested in the group, but a mix-up prevented the tapes for their third single, "Sometime Ago"/"Theatre of Your Eyes," from getting to the company in New York on time. A potential contract with Uni Records came to nothing, and their third single, as well as a dozen tracks cut live in the Weiss home in January of 1968, went unheard. A few more songs were cut on behalf of Buena Vista Records, but the death of the label head scotched the deal, and a potential contract with Alden Records fell apart, along with the group, following an acid party at the owner's Los Angeles mansion in the summer of 1969. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

In my never ending quest to find all musical things New Jersey i have unearthed this weird little private Rock nugget. It was recorded at Trax East in South River N.J. by a good friend of mine Eric Rachel. it kinda has a somewhat Punk or Punky vibe. And I'm sure if it was from 1978 instead of 1984 it would be a high dollar KBD? (Ha Ha) item. Either way I'm lost on the Hey Leo "where'd you get the hat" joke. But it aint too bad of a tune. Your Fool is a more straight up Power Pop (poop) tune. Not too shabby. I kinda dig it. It sounds a little bit like Ace Frehley from KISS on vocals.... Looks like he has another 7 inch from 1981 but I've never seen or heard it. Got any info?

So i picked this thing up not knowing anything about it but it looked kinda weird and man am i glad i did. The A side is not really my thing. Its a goofy calypso tune done in a kinda "Fugs" way about traffic here on the east coast. It's OK, but the winner is the Flip called "Eye Of The Needle" which is also done in a sorta Fugs or early Country Joe and Fish style psychedlic late 60's trip out vein but from 1976....

This 45 was released under "Rambling Dogs" but They realeased a full length album under the name "Elmer City Rambling Dogs" in 1975. And this 45 was realeased with only the label on the A side and i only know that the flip is called eye of the needle because while looking for info on the band i stumbled upon another blog called Glorify The Turd where the lead "screamer" Teeny Tar of the "Elmer City" Rambling Dogs posted the folowing info:

the elmer city rambling dogs also released a 45 record. the a side was a song by james rowland called TRIBORO BRIDGE. it was about fighting traffic in new york city trying to get to the TRIBORO BRIDGE. the b side was a song by me teeny tar called EYE OF THE NEEDLE. it was an anti-drug song. the a side only has a label which has the dog dirt records logo and underneath that is an 1940 airplane pulling a banner that says “presents” and to the right of that is a sideway headshot of king kong looking at the banner. the b side has no label but it does have eye of the needle.

talk about rare. i don’t think you could ever find this.

Sometimes i wonder why i like a certain thing and this is one of those cases. I make no apology for liking crappy music. i like A LOT of stupid shit. I have a wide pallet when it comes to music, but i do wonder sometimes.... This here crap falls somewhere between Asbury Park N.J. City Rock Ala Bruce Springsteen and South Side Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and at times some sorta Bluesy New Wave, but all from Australia which makes it even more strange. I still can't put my finger its appeal to me..... Elvis Costello thought so much of Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons' single "So Young" that he recorded a version himself. Not sure what that says about me liking this.... maybe i just like the album cover..... Yeah, i think that's it.

In honor of R.E.M. breaking up i give you a song they covered some long time ago. Not the biggest R.E.M. fan here but i dated a bunch of chicks who were and i guess some of that rubs off over time... Don't hate on them, don't love them... Check out my last post of them doing TDrak Globe from Syd Barrett.

"Superman" is a 1969 song by the Texas band The Clique, made more famous in 1986 when recorded by R.E.M.
It was written by Mitchell Bottler and producer/songwriter Gary Zekley and originally released as the b-side to The Clique's hit "Sugar on Sunday," itself a cover of a Tommy James and the Shondells song.
R.E.M. recorded it for their fourth album, Lifes Rich Pageant. It was released as a single and received a fair amount of radio play, but did not chart on the main U.S. singles chart, though it did reach #17 on Billboard magazine's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

Lead singer Michael Stipe was not as enthusiastic about recording the song as the other band members were, and as a result bassist Mike Mills debuted on lead vocals with Stipe providing background.

Anyway here is the original. A Pretty cool little 60's pop rock nugget.

Just some good old Rock and Roll music. Produced by Jimi Hendrix. The record is a little noisy but its a crappy styrene copy and i only paid 25 cents for it! BUT HENDRIX PRODUCED IT!

Cat Mother and The All Night Newsboys was co-founded by Roy Michaels and Bob Smith in the fall of 1967. Michaels had previously been playing with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay in the Au Go Go Singers, prior to the formation of Buffalo Springfield. Initial members were Bob Smith on vocals, keyboards and drums, Roy Michaels on vocals and bass guitar, William David "Charlie" Chin on vocals and guitar, Larry Packer on guitar and violin, and Michael Equine on drums and guitar. Jay Ungar was also initially associated with the group, on violin, and rejoined the group for their second album. Core band membership consisted of Michaels, Smith and Equine.
The band's popularity in New York grew during 1967 and 1968, through regular appearances at the Cafe Wha?, which led to an engagement as the house band at New York's Electric Circus.
The band was particularly notable for releasing a Top 40 hit in the summer of 1969, reaching no. 21 on the U.S. Billboard Pop Chart, with the rock and roll medley "Good Old Rock 'n' Roll". The medley included cover versions of "Sweet Little Sixteen" by Chuck Berry, "Long Tall Sally" by Little Richard, "Chantilly Lace" by The Big Bopper, "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" by Jerry Lee Lewis, "Blue Suede Shoes" by Carl Perkins and "Party Doll" by Buddy Knox. The single and the band's first album, The Street Giveth and the Street Taketh Away, were produced by Jimi Hendrix. The association with Hendrix came through the band meeting him in New York City. Cat Mother was initially managed by Michael Jeffrey, who also managed Hendrix. Cat Mother opened for Hendrix on several occasions, as a result. Other notable early appearances included playing at the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival, the historic concert headlined by The Doors, where John Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band appeared in a surprise performance.
Other popular songs by the band included "The Street Giveth and the Street Taketh Away", "Strike a Match and Light Another", and "Cat Mother". However, the band's principal chart success remained "Good Old Rock 'n' Roll", which was not representative of the diversity of its sound. Similar to contemporaries Moby Grape, Poco and the post-1967 Byrds, as well as predating The Eagles, Cat Mother was one of the first rock bands to blend rock and country music.
As part of the band's actions to sever ties with manager Michael Jeffrey, the band relocated to San Francisco as of 1970, and later settled in the Mendocino area. By the time of their 1970 second album, Albion Do-Wah, they were joined by Jay Ungar (violin, mandolin, guitar, & vocals), Paul Johnson (guitar), and special guest Lyndon Lee Hardy (vocals on two songs). The third album, Cat Mother, released in 1972, featured Michaels, Smith and Equine joined by Charlie Prichard (lead & slide guitar) and Steve Davidson (congas & percussion). By the time of the band's final album, Last Chance Dance, in 1973, Charlie Prichard had been replaced by Charlie Harcourt on guitar, harmonica and vocals. The band continued to perform until 1977.

The Troggs were one of the toughest and most gloriously unpolished bands to emerge from the U.K. during the British Invasion era -- the leering, monolithic pound of "Wild Thing" and "I Can't Control Myself" was about the closest thing to the Stooges that emerged on vinyl before James Osterberg reinvented himself as Iggy Pop, and lead singer Reg Presley all but defined the word "lascivious" with his guttural howls and moans on their best recordings. The Troggs had dropped off the charts by the end of the '60s, but they were the sort of band that simply didn't believe in giving up, and in 1975 they returned to the studio to cut their first album in five years. Simply called The Troggs, the album found the group updating their sound just a bit, with the results at times suggesting a cross between Status Quo-style boogie and blue collar glam in the manner of Slade, especially on the honest self-celebration of "Full Blooded Band." The Troggs is dominated by covers, boasting only three new songs, but one of them, "Summertime," was inspired sleaze in the classic Troggs tradition (and features the best rudely suggestive stutter since "My Generation"), and you can't argue that the grimy and stripped down re-imagining of the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" (which rewrites the opening line as "I like the clothes she almost wears") took the song someplace Brian Wilson never would have imagined. The Troggs' take of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" doesn't need to go on for five-and-a-half minutes, and the reggae-influenced recut of "Wild Thing" doesn't work especially well, but The Troggs demonstrate that these guys never forgot how to be rude and crude in the studio, and at their best they turned it into an art form -- not that they'd ever dream of calling it that.

Steel Pole Bathtub w/ a great noisy take on the Hendrix classic and an equally noisy flip. I always liked these guys w/ their wild brand of post punk grungy psychedlic rock and samples galore. I was lucky enough to catch them here on the East Coast back around the time Lurch came out. Still even have my Lurch T-shirt.... Although it seems to have gotten smaller over time..... I still need a copy of Tulip on vinyl. Anyone?

Steel Pole Bath Tub was a hardcore punk/noise rock band, formed in 1986 in Bozeman, Montana by Mike Morasky (guitar/vocals) and Dale Flattum (bass/vocals).

Morasky and Flattum moved the band to Seattle, Washington where Darren Mor-X (drums) joined the band, before they all moved to San Francisco, California.[when?] The band became known for their chaotic, noisy style and frequent use of television and movie samples, with several 7" singles and albums on Boner Records, before being signed to Slash Records and releasing their major label debut in 1995. Their signing to Slash was part of a mid-1990s free-for-all signing bonanza of alternative rock bands, particularly bands from the Northwestern United States in the wake of the surprising commercial success Geffen Records had with Nirvana, many of which ended in creative and ownership conflicts. Steel Pole Bath Tub and Slash's relationship was no different. The only album they ever released on Slash contained very few samples, which had previously been a staple of the band, at the insistence of Slash's legal department. The band hoped their second album for Slash would be a cover of The Cars' first album in its entirety, but the label would not allow that idea and then deemed the demos the band submitted (which contained three Cars covers) unlistenable and refused to release them. The band wouldn't release any more significant material until the rights to the music they recorded for Slash would revert to them 2002. In 2002, the band released those recordings as the album "Unlistenable", the title a play on a Slash executives comments on the material and reformed to play the Beyond the Pale festival at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco in November 2002, where they co-headlined with Neurosis and Tarantula Hawk.[1] They reunited to play a show at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland, Oregon on September 4, 2008 as a part of MusicFestNW.
The group's song "Train to Miami," from the album The Miracle of Sound in Motion, was featured in a November 2008 television ad for the PC and Xbox 360 game, Left 4 Dead.[2] Mike Morasky is also responsible for writing and performing the songs by the fictional band Midnight Riders in the game's sequel, Left 4 Dead 2.

Ok, a little help here. I could not find anything and i mean anything out about this records. I can't find anything about Mr. Jim Orange on a green record. I couldn't even find out anything about "Golly Records". The only Gaylarks i could find are from mid/late 50's and this doesn't sound that old and none of their songs are the same as this or on Golly records. As for Myron Smith on piano.... well, there is a bunch of them out there and none seemed to match. And nothing on L. Thompson & W. Gollender.... Anyone know anything about this "unknown" soul cut?

When your digging for records you never know what you will find. And you find some strange stuff sometimes. I always buy the strange stuff as long as the price it right. But finding stuff like this always bums me out. It's like throwing out a part of someones life. Tossed away & discarded and no one gives a shit... Did Pvt. D.J. Sottilaro even make it out of the war alive? And why doesn't any family member care about this recording? I find it strange and sad.... Seems these were made by the Pepsi Cola company for service men in World War II to send home to family. They would set up portable machines and the men would make a record to send back home to fill family in on what was going on. The record is noisy but you can hear old D.J. telling it like it was back in 1943. I wonder why this was tossed away...?

Charles "Charlie" Ryan (December 19, 1915, Graceville, Minnesota – February 16, 2008, Spokane, Washington) was an American singer and songwriter, best known for co-writing and first recording the rockabilly hit single "Hot Rod Lincoln".

Ryan grew up in Polson, Montana and moved to Spokane in 1943. He served in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he worked as a musician and songwriter, touring with artists such as Jim Reeves and Johnny Horton. In 1955, he and W. S. Stevenson wrote "Hot Rod Lincoln", and Ryan recorded the first version of the song (as "Charlie Ryan and the Livingston Brothers"). I mean, just think, the very next year in 1964 The Kinks would blow everything up along with The Stones, The Who & The Beatles. The Beacon Street Union was a 1960s psychedelic era rock band, named for a street in their native Boston, whose original members were John Lincoln Wright (vocals, percussion), Paul Tartachny (guitar, vocals), Wayne Ulaky (bass, vocals), Robert Rhodes (keyboards, bass), and Richard Weisberg (drums). With the exception of a few rock standards, their diverse music was composed by group members, primarily Wright and Ulaky.
MGM Records promoted them as part of the so-called "Bosstown Sound" (along with the groups Ultimate Spinach and Orpheus), with little success. Their first album was released directly before Ultimate Spinach's first album. After two albums, Wright, Ulaky, Weisberg, and Rhodes recorded an album as Eagle. Later in the 1970s, Wright went on to write and sing country music as leader of the Sour Mash Boys. The first Beacon Street Union album charted at #75 on May 4 of 1968.

It actually sounds as if it being played at the wrong speed but the 45 says "45 R.P.M." I've included a version @ 33 RPM's so you can be the judge...

Its nice to know that people are still making fucked up music in this day and age when almost everything sucks coperate MTV cock. This is one of the better new punk bands i have heard recently but I know nothing about this band, i hear rumors of being banned from bars across LA which is fine with me. Their brand of snotty post punk noise sits fine in my ears. and any band that can sneak a swastika and a star of david on their 45 label is ok w/ me. Couple that with cool swirl vinyl, hand silk screened cover and a limited release of 150, and the fact that i only paid 2 dollars for this, i'm all in... Anyone know anything about these people?

The Offs are a punk/ska band from San Francisco, started by guitarist Billy Hawk and singer Don Vinil, and later joined by Bob Steeler on drums and a rotation of horn players including Bob Roberts, Richard Edson and Roland Young. The Offs were major players in the early days of the San Francisco punk rock scene. Their first record was a self-released 7" single featuring a cover of the Slickers' "Johnny Too Bad" with the Billy Hawk-penned "624803" on the B-side. Subsequent releases include the singles "Everyone's a Bigot" (which appeared on the Alternative Tentacles hardcore/art punk compilation Let Them Eat Jellybeans and "You Fascinate Me." Lead singer Don Vinil was known for his outrageous on-stage behavior. Fellow San Francisco punk group, Dead Kennedys had their first show with the Offs in 1978. They frequently played at San Francisco's famed Mabuhay Gardens.

Up until recently i had no idea WTF city rock was or is. I'm still sorta confused. I'd like ya'll to help me out here!?!?

Just look at these guys with their fur lined denim & leather jackets, mutsaches, shaggy beards, glasses, flip flops & hush puppies.... they look like they just got off work down at the local factory and are headed to thelocal bar for some cocaine and michelob. And you gotta have some balls to name your band "The Planets"... I mean why not just call yourselves "The Universe" or GOD...

Yes this record as seen better days... the cover is a little beat up and the vinyl a few clicks but i just found this at a garage sale and only for a buck. These Dangerhouse singles don't turn up so often in the wild so for one dollar this was a bargin, water stained cover and all. ok, so it's not the dils, weirdos, bags or avengers but still.... it was only a dollar! anyway, obsolete really is a great guitar driven punky ROCK song. And that makes sense since Mr. Werth was a one time member of Audience, who were cult British art rock band which existed between 1969 and 1972.

Established in Philadelphia in 1974, during the flashpoint of the punk culture in New York City, London and Los Angeles. Pure Hell was the first all-Black punk band.

Amid the pioneers of the post garage, acid rock, glam-theatre era of the late 60's/early 70's, Pure Hell are considered one of the first of their kind, comparable to the Sex Pistols, Dead Boys, The Germs. Commercially, the band had little success, and only released this one single. There was an album recorded that was never released but it has since seen the light of day now.
